WHERE DOES THE TOWN CENTRE END?

A little room at the edges.

01 · Core

The census’s main town-centre cluster, including High Street and its streets and mews.

02 · Town-centre outer

Nearby businesses assigned to the outer area in the census. Keep them in, or narrow your search to the core.

03 · Edge-of-centre

Businesses assigned to the edge of the centre. Shown separately so you can choose how far to explore.

These are census groupings, not a surveyed boundary.

ABOUT THIS FIRST PASS

A living directory starts
with an honest snapshot.

The directory starts with the supplied census dated 4 October 2026. A cleanup on 5 October groups overlapping categories, corrects evidenced ownership and address errors, and adds the previously missing Crooked Crow Bar. Original census values are retained in the downloadable data. This is a beta, not an exhaustive or fully verified census.

What “independent” means here

“Independents only” includes single-site and likely single-site businesses, plus locally operated independents where evidence supports that assessment. Building ownership and day-to-day operation can differ for pubs. Unclear operators are flagged and excluded from this filter until checked. Small regional groups and charities remain separate. Selecting Charity shops clears the independent-only and ownership filters so charities are visible.

Dates and evidence

“Census checked” is the spreadsheet date. “Online review” shows a later review, with the specific fields reviewed in each record. A category cleanup alone does not verify trading status. Confidence labels come from the census unless a review changes them; search-only evidence and unresolved address or ownership questions are visibly flagged. Opening hours and exact map pins have not been verified.

New openings & changes

No opening dates are supplied. “New opening” appears only when an opening date is added to the data; businesses are never called new just because they appear in the census. Closed, temporarily closed and needs-verification records are available in the status filter.

Geography

Core, Town-centre outer and Edge-of-centre follow the workbook. They are practical groupings rather than surveyed polygons. The workbook references Central Bedfordshire’s Local Plan and the historic town directory for context.

Corrections and claims

Suggestions are saved and exported locally for now. They do not change the public records. A shared review queue and verified owner accounts can be connected later.
